Position overview:
The Supplier Development Engineer (SDE) is a key role at MAGNA which is responsible for working with its external supplier’s delivery of quality parts. The SDE is involved in supplier selection process and to approve new components via Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for release to serial production. Activities include the verification of the supplier’s understanding and application of design requirements, statement of work, specifications, industry, automotive, customer and MAGNA Standards. SDE assures component project timing to ensure a timely and flawless launch of new parts. The SDE will work with internal teams such as Purchasing, Engineering, and other Quality and Project teams to plan quality events and resolve issues.
SDE position reports to Regional Quality Manager.
What you can expect (key responsibilities)
• Actively involved in new potential supplier selection and supplier onboarding process
o Perform Prequalification audits according to VDA 6.3 (P1) and work with Purchasing and Engineering in defining the viability of new suppliers.
• Actively involved in new component sourcing
o Involved in Request For Quotation (RFQ) process, Team Feasibility Commitment (TFC) process with Purchasing, Engineering and Suppliers.
o Involved in concurrence meeting and assessments.
o Setting the component RISK classification for a component project together with Purchasing and Engineering.
• Owner of Supplier Quality Project supporting APQP & PPAP
o Define APQP tasks based on the Component Risk classification and PPAP level required.
o Follow up completion of APQP tasks in terms of timing and quality for defined deliverables.
o Lead supplier audits (VDA 6.3), production trial runs and participate in Run at Rate
o Owner of the PPAP approval.
• Escalate APQP/PPAP delays / deviations.
• Assist Engineering in the transfer of Customer Specific requirements to the suppliers (Drawing, Spec, TFC Review)
• Supplier KPI rating for timing and service level parameters in APQP/PPAP performance
What you'll bring (key qualifications/requirements)
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- At least 3 years professional experience in quality engineering in automotive manufacturing environment.
- Experience in the automotive manufacturing industry, preferably in one or more of the following commodities areas; Microprocessor, Circuit Boards, Micro-Electromechanical (MEMS) Sensors, ASICs.
- Experience in deployment and/or auditing of PPAP, 8D, FMEA, PFMEA.
- Knowledgeable in ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 14001 requirements.
- Knowledgeable in AE Council Guideline such as AEC-QXXX qualification requirements.
- Excels at oral communication, reading, and written skills – English language proficiency required.
- Experience in coaching, mentoring and negotiating.
- Demonstrates high competence in assembling data and present information in a clear concise manner.
- Must have strong problem-solving skills and quality systems knowledge 1+ year(s) previous experience in supply chain, quality and/or high-volume manufacturing.
- Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of quality tools common in the automotive industry (AIAG/VDA: APQP, PPAP, Ppk/Cpk, MSA, 8D, FMEA,SPC etc.).
- Must have strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet and database management software applications.
- General knowledge of IATF 16949, VDA, MAGNA, Automotive, and Customer standards and requirements.
- Must have the ability to effectively interact with managers and team members.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to excellence and high standards.
- Team oriented; Ability to bring people together and drive results with project management and development of specific goals, challenges, and action plans.
- Ability to manage priorities and workflow.
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work.
- Working knowledge and the application of advanced Quality tools such as Failure Modes Effect Analysis (FMEA), GD&T, SPC, Root Cause Analysis, and Measurement System Analysis.
- Knowledge and understanding of Lean Manufacturing.
- Willingness to undergo external/internal training if identified gaps in the role exist, e.g., to become a certified VDA 6.3 auditor.
- SDE's are required to travel domestically and internationally to suppliers and other MAGNA facilities.
